G-Analysis: The Benefits of Negative Attention Video Script
Hey there and welcome to G-Analysis, where we take something interesting about gaming and analyze it. So what does the title of this video mean? Any content creator out there on YouTube and other platforms welcomes any attention they get. So what about negative attention? Does someone, who puts out content, try to avoid all negativity targeted towards them? Some do, but there are others who actually bank on it. What we are trying to show in this video, is the benefits negative attention can bring someone.
Negative attention brings benefits?
The biggest advantage of negative attention is the exposure you get from it. Any kind of attention will get people looking at your content and talking about it. This will give you ad revenue and will also prompt more people to look at your stuff and hence continuing the cycle. This benefit is available even without including, what the increased views will gain you in terms of the Youtube algorithms.
So you get more ad revenue, is that it? There’s actually so much more that you gain from negative attention. When people talk about you or engage with your content, you actually have influence over them. Suddenly, people care about what you do and this influence manifests into a person’s subconscious. You now have power over the people talking negatively about you, even if it is very limited. Each time you are the center of someone’s discussion, other people will check you out and some people might actually like you and stay for more of your content.
And on top of that, negative attention is actually really easy to get compared to positive attention. Just make a video about something controversial and watch the dislikes and hateful comments pour into your channel. But hold on a minute, getting dislikes and hateful comments is bad for you and the algorithms, why would you want that? Actually, Youtube barely cares whether you liked or disliked a video, as long as you engaged with it.
To explain why, just imagine the perfect website. This website only ever writes positive words about the things you love. You might end up enjoying this place, but oftentimes only for a while. You will usually end up expecting exactly what the site will tell you, making a visit entirely pointless. What will make you actually come back to that homepage is if they post content you are surprised by. This is most likely content you disagree with and will prompt you to engage with it and Google is absolutely aware of that.
So what can we do about that?
So what can we then do about content providers we dislike? Is there nothing we can do to stop them? It is actually really entertaining, that the answer to this question is actually within the question itself. Doing nothing is precisely the way to stop them. Imagine if certain controversial content would have never gotten any attention whatsoever. People would be looking at other, possibly more positive things and the provider of that content would hold zero powers.
So maybe consider focusing your energy on websites and content creators you like and want to see get more exposure. Being positive will generally also make you a happier person, so we can recommend you do so for your own sake as well. We do have to say though that negative attention and criticims towards someone else can be necessary, but this is a topic for another day.
